Geochemistry Workshops on Four Continents

The last 4 months of 2022 really were hectic: delivering exploration geochemistry workshops/webinars on four continents (three in person, one virtual) plus two trips to Finland Co-Au mineral exploration projects, one to a Co-Ni project in Spain and another Due Diligence visit to a Cu prospect in Nevada, USA.

This period started with an in-house “gChem Summit” hosted by Extrados Exploration on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe, Nevada (USA). Passing on my experience in sample survey design and implementation in exploration programs, with follow-along data interpretation training using ioGAS. The course also included a half-day tour of ALS laboratory in Reno which demonstrated how to audit a lab to the team of economic geologists from Extrados.

Then it was off to beautiful Viña del Mar (Chile) to deliver a short-course “Data Science in Ore Deposit Geochemistry: Processes to Predictions” jointly with Prof. Cliff Stanley (Acadia University) and McLean Trott (ALS-Goldspot). This was part of the IAGS2022 symposium. Participants were from several major mining companies active in South America. We took them sequentially through the theory of element ratios to define lithogeochemistry and alteration for target generation. Followed by demonstrating outcomes achieved from interpreting well constrained geochemical data and follow-along data interpretation training using ioGAS, finishing off with a comparative hands-on application of Machine Learning using Orange.

Next up was a trip to London (UK) and a contribution to Imdex organized workshop “Creating Value in Early Data Collection in Exploration and How to Use it” the day before a Mines and Money conference. Between Dr. Dave Lawie`s introductory discussion and Dr. James Cleverley’s wrap-up, I showed participants the value-adding impacts of recent work I’ve done interpreting multi-element data sets in advanced exploration and geomet projects around the world.

The last speaking engagement of the year came in the form of a webinar organized by ALS Global, Johannesburg office (Southern and East Africa region). This session was titled “Best Practices in Exploration Geochemistry & Resource Definition” which was similar to one I previously gave in Spanish for ALS Global, Mexico office during Covid. The presentation covered several aspects of QA/QC and how getting it right the first time reduces costs later in the mineral exploration project life-cycle.
