Happy New Year!

We kicked off 2026 by attending the 48th Mineral Deposit Studies Group (MDSG) Conference in Cardiff. It was fantastic to see such a strong showcase of research and innovation from across the UK and globally.

We wanted to highlight a few standout presentations:

  • James Davey (SRK) shared advancements in geodynamic models and mineral prospectivity mapping, supporting target generation in the Arabian Shield. This work leverages newly available high-resolution datasets to address uncertainties in historic models and refine mineral systems understanding.
  • Ian McDonald delivered a thought-provoking talk on Niggli Numbers—calculated variables that provide a consistent geochemical framework for interpreting sample compositions. He demonstrated how these diagrams reveal insights into mineral assemblages and processes such as alteration and fractionation.
  • Erin Thompson (Aberdeen Minerals) presented how exploratory data analysis of geochemical analyses, combined with geological observations and mineral chemistry, are refining the stratigraphy of the Arthath intrusion. This work offers valuable insight into Ni-Cu-Co mineralisation controls, informing the project’s exploration model to increase the likelihood of success.

A big thank you to the MDSG organisers and all contributors—we thoroughly enjoyed the conference and look forward to continued collaboration in 2026!
